Site Clearing & Mass Grading
Heavy civil earthwork including clearing, grading, and site preparation for industrial projects.
Site clearing and mass grading establish the foundation for every industrial project in the DFW Metroplex. Before any structure can rise, the land must be prepared: vegetation cleared, unsuitable soils removed, elevations established, and the site shaped to meet drainage and building requirements.
Clearing operations range from open fields requiring minimal work to heavily wooded sites needing complete vegetation removal. We handle tree removal, stump grinding, and debris disposal in compliance with local regulations. Some municipalities have tree preservation requirements that affect clearing plans. We navigate these requirements efficiently.
Mass grading shapes the site to final elevations shown on civil drawings. This involves cutting high areas, filling low areas, and achieving proper compaction throughout. In North Texas, where expansive clay soils are common, moisture conditioning and proper compaction are critical to avoid future settlement problems.
Erosion control is required throughout earthwork operations. We install sediment basins, silt fencing, and inlet protection to prevent offsite discharge. These best management practices are maintained throughout construction until permanent stabilization is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does site clearing and grading take?
Duration depends on site size and complexity. A typical 20-acre industrial site takes 4-8 weeks for clearing and mass grading. Factors include vegetation density, cut and fill volumes, soil conditions, and weather. We provide specific schedules during preconstruction.
What happens to cleared vegetation?
We typically chip tree material on-site for use as mulch or haul to recycling facilities. Stumps are ground and disposed of appropriately. Some municipalities allow burning with proper permits. We handle disposal in the most cost-effective compliant manner.
How do you handle unsuitable soils?
Geotechnical reports identify unsuitable materials that must be removed. We excavate to competent material, properly dispose of unsuitable soils, and backfill with suitable material compacted in lifts. This undercut work is critical to building performance.
What about existing utilities on site?
We locate and protect existing utilities that will remain and coordinate abandonment or relocation of utilities that conflict with the new development. Utility locates happen before any excavation begins.
How is compaction verified?
An independent testing agency performs compaction testing throughout earthwork operations. We compact in lifts with proper moisture content and verify density before proceeding. Documentation of compaction testing is part of the project record.
